I just watched Farewell my Concubine yesterday. A nice but sad movie which I don't really understand. Set in Old Society China with Beijing Opera as the background, this show requires repeated viewings for a non-opera-trained person like myself to understand.
It's a 172-min show about the compelling tale of two lifelong friends unexpectedly caught in a passionate love triangle with a woman who comes between them. Cheng Dieyi（呈蝶衣）, Duan Xiaolou（段小楼）and Juxian（菊娴）.
I like Dieyi, his character in the movie is both strong and weak at the same time. Strong, because he would not give up his love for opera and Duan Xiaolou. Weak, because of his love for Xiaolou. Two sides of a character, shown because of his ability to love deeply. I like the part where Dieyi's performing with Master Yuan (or Master Yu????) The way he was moving about in a drunken state, and the way he laughed and hugged Master Yuan, is so cute!!
Duan Xiaolou's character is that of a headstrong, mischievous free bird with no regard for personal safety. To him, standing up for his rights is the most important, without caring that two others, Juxian and Dieyi, have hearts in their mouths when he gets into trouble.
Juxian is smart, both emotional and heartless; I quite like her character too.
I read the book version of Farewell my Concubine, borrowed from a library. The book version is also very sad and touching and the movie was almost totally adapted from the book. However there was one small difference. Instead of using a bat, a turtle was used for the soup.
This movie raised a few questions within myself. In the end, did Dieyi kill himself? What was Dieyi's feelings about Juxian and vice versa? Who did Xiaolou treasure the most and did he realise Dieyi's sacrifices for him?
FMC is such a nice show, no wonder there are still exhibitions of the movie held, in HK....
Am a girl who generally acts nice in public, but inside her head, she probably thinks you're a waste of life. And that's why she's quiet.
